Filter / Facets patterns

Filtering and facets: how shoppers narrow a listing page down to what fits, and how stores show what's applied. Every example below is a real capture from a live storefront, not a mockup.

About the filter / facets pattern

What it is

Filtering is how a shopper narrows an already-loaded listing page down to the subset of products that fit a specific attribute, size, color, price band, brand, rating, without leaving the grid. It's typically a panel of facets (sometimes inline, sometimes tucked behind a "Filter" button) paired with the grid re-rendering to show only matching products and some visible confirmation of what's currently applied.

Why it matters for conversion

A shopper who filters has just told the store exactly what they care about, so getting this interaction right has an outsized effect on whether that session ends in a purchase. A slow re-render, a filter panel that resets on navigation, or applied filters that aren't visibly confirmed all create the same failure: a shopper who narrowed the grid correctly but can't tell whether it worked, and either second-guesses the result or abandons rather than re-checking every tile by hand.

What to look for

A well-built filter interaction shows the applied state clearly, as chips, a highlighted control, or an updated result count, so there's no ambiguity about what's currently narrowing the grid. It updates the grid without a full page reload, keeps a one-click way to clear a single filter or all of them, and, on mobile, opens the facet panel as a full-height overlay rather than a cramped inline section that pushes the grid off-screen.

Common variations

Marketplaces and large catalogs invest in dense, multi-facet sidebars (brand, price, rating, seller) since their assortments are too large to browse unfiltered. Smaller, single-category DTC stores often reduce filtering to two or three high-value facets, size and color, since a longer facet list would filter a small catalog down to nothing useful. Some themes render facets inline on the page at all times, skipping the separate open-a-panel step entirely, which is its own distinct interaction from the trigger-and-panel pattern.
